Pressure sensors for measuring ultra-low pressures

The Honeywell ABP2-Serie expands the existing range of pressure sensors with solutions for Ultra Low Pressure (ULP) range. hese sensors are specially designed for applications that require extremely low pressure measurements, such as air quality monitoring and HVAC-Systems.

Scope of application of ABP2

Honeywell´s ABP2 series pressure sensors play a key role in monitoring and improving indoor air quality, making them an essential component of smart air filtration systems.

Clean air – important in many areas

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), outdoor and indoor air pollution was responsible for approximately 12% of all global deaths in 2019. This ranks air pollution as the fourth leading risk factor for disease and mortality worldwide, making it one of the main risk factors after high blood pressure, smoking, and poor nutrition.

What types of air pollution are there?:

  • Primary air pollution: Direct emissions of pollutants into the air, such as vehicle exhaust, industrial waste, and smoke from fires.
  • Secondary air pollution: Pollutants created by chemical reactions in the atmosphere, such as ozone and particulate matter.
  • Biological air pollution: Contamination from natural sources such as pollen, mold spores, and animal hair.

Air filtration systems are crucial for minimizing the effects of air pollution. They help remove harmful particles and gases from the air and improve air quality. This is especially important indoors, where people spend a lot of time and air pollution is often higher than outside.

Areas and applications of air filter systems:

  • Healthcare: In hospitals and clinics to reduce germs and bacteria, e.g., in operating rooms.
  • Households: Air purifiers in living spaces remove allergens, dust, and odors.
  • Industry: Filter systems in production facilities protect against industrial dust, smoke, and vapors.
  • Office buildings: Air filter systems ensure better air quality and a healthier working environment.

The use of air filter systems in these areas significantly improves air quality, protecting both human health and the efficiency of the facilities.

How do differential pressure sensors help improve air quality?

Differential pressure sensors play a crucial role in monitoring in ventilations systems. They measure the pressure difference before and after the filter to determine the degree of contamination of the filter. If the filter is in optimal condition, the pressure difference between it and the filter is minimal. However, if the filter is clogged, the pressure difference increases. The ABP2 differential pressure sensor is equipped with two pressure connections: The ABP2 P1 connection is connected to the inlet of the filter, while the ABP2 P2 connection is connected to the outlet of the filter, thus enabling fine tuning of air filter and purification systems to comply with alarm thresholds.

Sauberer Filter und verschmutzter Filter

As filters become increasingly dirty, their performance decreases, forcing the fan to work harder to keep the system running and consuming more power. Thanks to the high accuracy and reliability of ABP2 sensors, they can provide timely warnings of dust and dirt deposits on filters and help maintenance teams plan preventive measures for filter replacement or cleaning.

When measuring a clogged filter or measuring air flow using a throttle, very small pressure differences (2.5 mbar to 25 mbar/2 inH2O to 10 inH2O) are measured, which fall within the lower range of the ultra-low pressure range.
