Thermistors
Thermistors are temperature-dependent resistors used in a wide range of applications for temperature measurement and control. They are made from semiconductor materials whose electrical resistance varies with temperature.
Two main types of thermistors are commonly used: NTC (negative temperature coefficient) and PTC (positive temperature coefficient). In addition, thermistors are available in glass-encapsulated versions. The glass coating provides high chemical resistance and stability across a wide temperature range.
Functionality
- NTC thermistors: With NTC thermistors, resistance decreases as temperature rises. This happens because more charge carriers (electrons) are available in the material at higher temperatures, which increases conductivity.
- PTC thermistors: With PTC thermistors, the resistance increases as the temperature rises. This type is often used in overcurrent protection circuits because it can limit the current flow at high temperatures.

Areas of application
- Temperature measurement: In air conditioning systems, refrigerators, and heating systems for accurate monitoring of the ambient temperature.
- Overcurrent protection: In electrical devices to protect against overheating due to sudden current spikes (especially PTC thermistors).
- Medical devices: For measuring body temperature or in other medical applications.
- Automotive industry: For monitoring engine and coolant temperatures.
- Household appliances: In washing machines, ovens, and other appliances for regulating operating temperature.
- High sensitivity: respond quickly to temperature changes and offer high accuracy.
- Compact design: ideal for space-saving applications.
- Cost-effective: relatively inexpensive compared to other temperature sensors.
- Wide temperature measurement range: can be used in a wide temperature range, depending on the specific type.
