Thermostats

Thermostats are used for both temperature control and over-temperature protection by interrupting the electrical circuit when a defined temperature is reached. These snap-action thermostats are available with either automatic or manual reset, phenolic or ceramic housings, and a wide range of mounting brackets and connection options.

Functionality

Snap-action thermostats, also known as bimetal thermostats, operate on a simple yet highly effective principle. At the core of the thermostat is a bimetallic strip composed of two metals with different coefficients of thermal expansion, permanently bonded together.

When the temperature changes, the two metals expand at different rates, causing the bimetallic strip to bend. Once a defined temperature threshold is reached, the deformation activates a snap-action mechanism that rapidly opens or closes the electrical circuit.

This fast and precise switching action ensures reliable temperature control by interrupting or restoring the current flow as required to maintain the desired temperature.

Areas of application

Bimetal thermostats are versatile and can be used in many areas:

  • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems: They are used to regulate the temperature in heating systems and air conditioning systems to ensure a constant room temperature.
  • Household appliances: They ensure the correct temperature control in appliances such as irons, coffee machines, and kettles.
  • Automotive industry: Bimetal thermostats are used in vehicles to control the engine temperature and regulate the heating.
  • Industrial applications: They are used in machines and systems to prevent overheating and monitor the temperature of processes.
  • Electronic devices: In some electronic devices, they are used to monitor the temperature and interrupt the flow of current if necessary.
  • High precision: They offer accurate temperature control and respond quickly to temperature changes.
  • Reliability: They are durable and reliable because they operate mechanically and do not require electronics.
  • Compact design: Snap-action thermostats are typically small and compact, making them ideal for use in confined spaces.
  • Versatility: They can be used in a wide range of applications, from household appliances to industrial machinery.
